L’Autonomie du serpent est une fiction contemporaine aux accents gothiques. Elle explore comment le trauma, en faisant effraction, transforme notre perception du réel et la manière dont nous habitons le monde.

Le projet s’inscrit dans la continuité de mon premier roman, Rien que le soleil (Grasset, 2021), notamment par l’exploration du flux de conscience, du fantasme et des masculinités, tout en portant de nouvelles ambitions formelles.

Le texte suit Esther Keller, historienne envoyée au coeur du massif des Bauges pour expertiser une statue médiévale. Très vite, elle se heurte à des complications administratives… jusqu’au jour où elle ouvre la mauvaise porte. Conte cruel, paranoïaque, L’Autonomie du serpent explore les liens entre désir et danger, curiosité des filles et culture du viol.

Le titre fait aussi référence à Aby Warburg et au motif de survivance : l’historien de l’art s’était intéressé au motif du serpent, voyant là une résurgence d’un motif antique dans l’art plus tardif de la Renaissance. De la même façon, survit ici « une chose » que la narratrice ne sait ni voir ni nommer, mais qui la pousse à agir. On entre quelque part, un peu à la façon du cabinet de Barbe-bleue :

« (…) c’est la clef du cabinet au bout de la grande galerie de l’appartement bas : ouvrez tout, allez partout ; mais, pour ce petit cabinet, je vous défends d’y entrer (…) »

Et plus on s’approche de ce qui brûle, plus il fait noir.

*The Serpent’s Autonomy* is a contemporary novel with Gothic undertones. It explores how trauma, by breaking in, transforms our perception of reality and the way we inhabit the world.
The project builds on my first novel, *Rien que le soleil* (Grasset, 2021), particularly through its exploration of stream of consciousness, fantasy and masculinities, whilst pursuing new formal ambitions.
The text follows Esther Keller, a historian sent to the heart of the Bauges mountains to assess a medieval statue. Very quickly, she encounters administrative complications… until the day she opens the wrong door. A cruel, paranoid tale, L’Autonomie du serpent explores the links between desire and danger, female curiosity and rape culture.

The title also refers to Aby Warburg and the motif of survivance: the art historian had taken an interest in the motif of the serpent, seeing in it a resurgence of an ancient motif in the later art of the Renaissance. In the same way, ‘a thing’ survives here that the narrator can neither see nor name, but which drives her to act. We enter a space, somewhat in the manner of Bluebeard’s chamber:
‘(…) this is the key to the chamber at the end of the great gallery of the lower apartment: open everything, go everywhere; but as for this little chamber, I forbid you to enter it (…)’
And the closer one gets to what is burning, the darker it becomes.
