Ma résidence au sein de neimënster me permettra de mettre en place une pratique de laborantine, de recherche et de création autour du lien, de la relation qui se crée entre les images et les matières avec lesquelles elles sont produites, des liens qui se tissent entre la production d’images photographiques et l’environnement, afin de ressaisir une forme de contact et de rétablir la fonction haptique de l’image.

Mon projet de résidence inclut une familiarisation avec le terrain et la rencontre avec d’autres

jardiniers, humains et plus qu’humains, afin de prélever des échantillons de plantes pour la préparation de bains photographiques pour le développement de négatifs et de tirages. Il s’agira d’explorer différentes recettes de développeurs à base de macérations et de fermentations de plantes. Ces préparations seront désactivées après leur usage et pourront être compostées. Mes recherches conduiront à plusieurs lectures de sens orientées par la trajectoire, l’odeur, les formes, les couleurs, le goût et l’utilisation des végétaux recueillis au sein de l’abbaye et de ses alentours. La documentation autour du contexte sociopolitique ayant participé à la dissémination des végétaux avec lesquels je travaillerai, le sens historique et politique des paysages environnants et la fonction du bâtiment au sein duquel je résiderai participeront également à l’élaboration de ma création.  

La transformation des matières, comme lien au monde, est au cœur de mes recherches, je m’intéresse à la matière en mouvement, au phénomène de transformation mutuelle qui se produit entre l’humain, les outils qu’il emploie et les matières, ayant chacune des singularités et des qualités expressives. Il s’agira d’observer l’agissement des matières et ce qui s’opère en moi de par cette transformation mutuelle, et de considérer la photographie comme un dialogue, un attrait nécessairement mutuel, un mouvement commun des un·es vers les autres.

Laurianne Bixhain est née en 1987 à Wiltz. Elle a obtenu un Bachelor et un Master en beaux-arts à l’École des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux, puis a complété un Meisterschülerstudium en photographie à l’Académie des arts visuels de Leipzig.

Parmi ses expositions récentes figurent Zone de contact à la Galerie Nosbaum Reding, Bruxelles (2026), et the sum of the words that accumulate within us à la Hobusepea Gallery, Tallinn (2024).

Elle a été artiste en résidence au Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2024) ; à Kordon, Hiiumaa (2024) ; au Centre national de l’audiovisuel, Luxembourg (2022) ; à l’ISELP, Bruxelles (2021) ; à la Fondation Biermans-Lapôtre, Paris (2018) ; à la Darling Foundry, Montréal (2017) ; et à Islington Mill, Manchester (2016).

Elle a participé à l’édition 2023 du Mois européen de la photographie, Luxembourg, ainsi qu’à l’édition 2018 des Rencontres de la photographie d’Arles. En 2018, elle a reçu le prix LEAP — Luxembourg Encouragement for Artists Prize.

My residency at neimënster will allow me to develop a laboratory-based, research-driven and creative practice focused on connection: the relationships that emerge between images and the materials through which they are produced, and the ties woven between photographic image-making and the environment, in order to regain a form of contact and restore the haptic function of the image.

My residency project includes becoming familiar with the site and meeting other gardeners, human and more-than-human, in order to gather plant samples for the preparation of photographic baths used to develop negatives and prints. I will explore different developer recipes based on plant macerations and fermentations. After use, these preparations will be deactivated and can be composted. My research will lead to multiple layers of meaning shaped by trajectory, smell, form, color, taste, and the uses of the plants collected within the abbey and its surroundings. Documentation related to the socio-political context that contributed to the dissemination of the plants I will work with, as well as the historical and political significance of the surrounding landscapes and the function of the building in which I will reside, will also inform the development of my work.

The transformation of materials, as a way of relating to the world, lies at the core of my research. I am interested in matter in motion and in the phenomenon of mutual transformation that occurs between humans, the tools they use, and materials—each possessing its own singularities and expressive qualities. I aim to observe the agency of materials and what takes place within me through this mutual transformation, and to consider photography as a dialogue, a necessarily reciprocal attraction, a shared movement toward one another.

She was included in the 2023 edition of the European Month of Photography, Luxembourg as well as the 2018 edition of the Rencontres de la photographie d’Arles. In 2018, she was awarded the LEAP — Luxembourg Encouragement for Artists Prize.
