En: For a long time, human rights were the subject of legal scholars, philosophers and theologians, who looked at them from dogmatic perspectives. The emphasis was on the development of norms in national constitutions and international declarations and on the philosophies that informed the articulation of these norms. Sociologists, historians or anthropologists hardly touched the subject. It was only since the late 1990s that human rights began to gain momentum in publications of the humanities. These studies other quite different explanations for the rise of human rights cultures in Western societies, but they all have one thing in common. They all emphasise the broad cultural transformations that were crucial for the legal and political recognition of human rights in contemporary Western democracies. It is the aim of the conference to refect the recent social scientific approaches on human rights in the light of the different disciplines concerned: sociology, political sciences, anthropology, history, philosophy...

Fr: Très longtemps, les droits de l'Homme furent le sujet des juristes, des philosophes et des théologiens, qui les considéraient à partir de « perspectives dogmatiques ». L'accent portait sur l'élaboration de normes dans les constitutions nationales et les déclarations internationales et sur les philosophies qui s'occupaient de l'articulation de ces normes. Sociologues, historiens ou anthropologues touchaient à peine le sujet. Ce n'est qu'à partir de la fin des années 1990 que les droits de l'Homme commencèrent à prendre de l'ampleur dans les publications des sciences humaines, soulignant les grandes transformations culturelles qui furent cruciales pour la reconnaissance juridique et politique des droits de l'Homme dans les démocraties occidentales contemporaines. Cette conférence aura pour objectif de penser les récentes approches des droits de l'Homme en sciences sociales à la lumière des différentes disciplines concernées: sociologie, sciences politiques, anthropologie, histoire, philosophie...
