Isadora Romero is working on her upcoming exhibition “Humo Semilla Raíz”, which focuses on stories about agrobiodiversity. Over the last 20 years, 75% of the world’s seed varieties have disappeared. Romero’s visual research looks at how the loss of ancestral memory and indigenous knowledge – as a result of colonisation, forced displacement and racism – is causing seeds to disappear at an alarming rate.

Isadora Romero is a freelance Ecuadorian visual storyteller based in Quito. Her work is a frontier between documentary and fine art photography, focusing on social justice, gender, and environmental issues. Among them the human relationship with agriculture and the preservation of agrobiodiversity in Latin America. Her work is also an exploration of the physical and digital materiality of the image and its discursive function. She is co-founder of Ruda Collective of Latin American women photographers. She has exhibited her work in solo shows in Ecuador and group exhibitions in other countries on several continents. She was invited to INAE’s Antarctic artistic residency. Among her main awards, she is the winner of the Discovery Award of Les Rencontres de la Photographie of Arles, France 2023, winner of the global and regional Open Format award of World Press Photo 2022, winner of the Poy Latam in the multimedia category 2023 and second place in Environment in 2021, winner of the Marilyn Stafford Award 2021. Selected for the Prince Claus Fund Artistic and Cultural Responses to Climate Change grant 2022; selected for the Magnum Foundation Photography and Social Justice Fellowship 2021 and the World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass 2020. She is the co-author of the photobook Seven Point Eight. She is also an educator and member of Women Photograph, Fotógrafos Ecuatorianos, Foto Féminas, and Diversify Photo.

Isadora Romero est une conteuse visuelle équatorienne indépendante basée à Quito. Son travail se situe à la frontière entre le documentaire et la photographie d’art, et se concentre sur la justice sociale, le genre et les questions environnementales. Elle a été invitée à la résidence artistique de l’INAE en Antarctique.
