" Europe will be made in crises and will be the sum of the solutions brought to these crises " noted Jean Monnet (1888-1979) in his memoirs. This sentence was premonitory because Europe is currently shaken by an unprecedented geopolitical and economic situation, which puts to the test the peace and the common values that multilateralism had generated after the Second World War. Before our eyes, a new system of world order is emerging, in which the European Union and the Western democracies occupy a prominent place. In the midst of these profound upheavals, historians - motivated both by the duty of remembrance and by civic engagement - are analyzing the lessons of the past in order to better understand the current challenges and to debate the prospects for the future
In his historical essay European Construction: the revolution of a continent, Gilles Grin reviews two centuries of the continent's history (1815 to 2021). He first analyzes the low point reached by Europe in 1945, and then evokes the birth, the developments and the limits of the European Community, now the European Union. The conclusion that emerges is that the process of European construction initiated in the aftermath of the Second World War represents the revolution of a continent that was able to break with the historical fatality of the incessant internal wars of the past.

Gilles Grin est directeur de la Fondation Jean Monnet pour l’Europe à Lausanne depuis 2012. Il est par ailleurs professeur à l’Université de Lausanne (Suisse), responsable d’un enseignement sur l’intégration européenne. Diplômé de l’Université de Lausanne, de l’Université Yale aux États-Unis et de la London School of Economics and Political Science, il est docteur en relations internationales de l’Institut de hautes études internationales et du développement à Genève. Il est l’auteur d’environ 70 publications consacrées largement aux questions européennes. Son dernier ouvrage, intitulé Construction européenne: la révolution d’un continent , a reçu le Prix du livre « Mieux comprendre l’Europe » 2022.
Jacques Santer, né en 1939, est un homme politique luxembourgeois. Il fut Premier ministre du Luxembourg entre 1989 et 1995 et président de la Commission européenne entre 1995 et 1999.
Elena Danescu est chercheuse au Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History à l’Université du Luxembourg.
