"The Appeal" explores one of the first public performative actions in the history of Israeli culture.
In 1936, the "Habima" circle in British-ruled Tel Aviv staged an imaginary literary trial following the theatre's decision to stage The Merchant of Venice in Hebrew for the first time. Even before the premiere, there was a lively public protest over the question: What should be put on the stage of the Hebrew Theatre? The accused were none other than William Shakespeare himself, the Habima Theatre and the director, Professor Leopold Jessner, who had recently fled Nazi Berlin in search of safe asylum.
In 2023, after my personal act of immigration, the internal and external voices of local politics reawakened and began to conduct an ideological and narrative trial against each other in my mind. In "The Appeal" I want to create a public stage for these internal, seemingly contradictory voices and invite an audience to take part in the discussion, similar to the event in 1936. Focusing on Leopold Jessner's story, I explore division, disagreement, conflict, silencing, belonging, compromise, multi-narratives and search for tools for conversation.
For each version of this performance I invite representatives of contemporary political voices - to argue, to testify, to play, to act, to reflect, to be reflected and to connect the historical appeal to the reality of our lives "right here, right now".
