As part of the artist residencies programme, the fruit of a partnership with Wallonie-Bruxelles International, neimënster is delighted to invite you to discover, or rediscover, three young artists, Louise Charlier, Romane Armand and Lison Ferné, through a rich and moving exhibition at the heart of a fantastic world.

Louise Charlier (1996) is an artist and doctoral student in art and art science (ENSAV La Cambre / Université Libre de Bruxelles / FNRS). Her work focuses on the observation of Space, its place of experimentation and representation, between art, science and fiction.

“Roscosmic speculative space agency” is a multidisciplinary project that plays on the fluid boundary between fiction and reality. This space agency is made up of different programmes and missions, each of which, in its own way, questions our relationship with Space. The main aim of Roscosmic speculative space agency is to propose new ways of seeing and thinking about space. By sharing a common vocabulary with public and private space agencies, the aim is to deconstruct and question these imaginary worlds by injecting disorder into reality.

Romane Armand works in the visual arts, printmaking, storytelling and bookbinding at Impression Forte in Brussels. She attaches great importance to stories, to what they convey and to the notion of conservation. In the not-too-distant future, she imagines stories in which non-humans have a voice. These characters, who live in the in-between, on the fringes of history, have one necessity: to exist.

Between 2012 and 2017, Romane studied illustration, comics, printed images and bookbinding at the Erg in Strasbourg during her Erasmus year. After her studies, she began working on a number of collective projects. With Éléonore Scardoni, she founded the comic review of Forgeries. This project won her the Victor Rossel prize for innovation in comics in 2020.

Lison Ferné is an illustrator and comic strip author based in Brussels.

After studying illustration at the École Estienne in Paris, Lison Ferné went on to study at the École de Recherche Graphique (erg) in Brussels, where she has lived and worked ever since.

Her first comic book, La Déesse Requin, was published in January 2020 by Cfc. In it, the author develops themes that are dear to her heart, such as ecological disasters, fantasy worlds and deep female characters. The book will be awarded the Artemisia Prize for Ecology in January 2021.

Her favourite themes are ecology, feminism, pop culture (comics, manga, anime, pop stars, k-pop), and mythologies and tales.

In this exhibition, Lison Ferné has chosen to show illustrations related to a new comics project set on a tropical island. It’s a return to the origins of part of the artist’s family, originally from the island of Martinique. The story is set in a fantasy world populated by monsters inspired by voodoo and Caribbean cosmogonies. The heroine is forced to descend inside a volcano, where she is confronted by this strange universe that is also a part of her. Through this fantastic universe, the artist explores multiple identities and the consequences this can have on the construction of the self.
